Maistone 3rd XV 51
Vigo 2nd XV 0
The last game of 2008 saw Maidstone play some really festive rugby,
scoring nine tries and running the ball from all places. The interpassing
between forwards and backs was at times an absolute joy to watch.
Maidstone started well with Chris Peddar, inspired last week, opening the
scoring with a good run down the right hand side. Hoping to add to this,
Maidstone then went into a period dominated by errors, becoming frustrated
by the mistakes and the doggedness of the opposition. Eventually things
started to click, and a well timed pass from Shaun Charlton to Chris
Peddar, put him away, and he managed to hand off and elude the coverig
defence to go over for his second score, one for each baby.
With Maidstone now back in control of the ball, Full back Dave Charlton
showed his pace and sidestep, scoring two great tries following excellent
handling moves in the backline. 24-0 at half time.
The second half really saw the forwards come into their own. Led by an
inspired Mark Fish, the off loading and interplay was exceptional. Fishy
opened the try fest with a pick up and crash over from a five metre line
out, following good pressure by Dave Coleman. The big second row then took
the kick off and galloped 20 metres with the Vigo forwards desperately
trying to down the Gravesend giant: he was like the huge Orc out of Lord of
the Rings ( twice as ugly though).
Dom Baxter got himself on the score sheet with a trade mark run, spinning
and shimmying through backs and forwards.
Vigo did respond and should have scored two tries themselves, but for a
wayward pass and a crunching tackle on the line by youngster Mike Hill,
who is seventeen years yonger then the next junior player in the team and
calls everyone 'uncle'.
The last 3 tries all came from lovely handling and running by forwards and
backs, but I cannot remember who finished them off-the scorer irrellevent
in a magnificent team performance. I think Shaun, Tuggy and Ian Howson may
have touched down, apologies if this is wrong.
a highlight for Vigo was the try saving tackle by their full back on his
opposite number. A beautiful flowing movement started by Tuggy behind his
own line, led to a burst by Shaun Charlton who fed Pete Mattinson, who
inturn appeared to put Howson away. Ian proceeded to turn his man inside
out and seemed certain to score the try of the match, when the Vigo man
came back and nailed him. A superb effort in defeat, much better than the
conversions taken by Maidstone in front of the posts, one missed and one
slid over by that reknowned kicker , lock Simon Wright. Final score 51-0
and we go into xmas top of the league, but knowing there are a lot of big
games ahead.
Man of match Mark Fish-superb all round performance. On the floor winning
ball; taking kick offs with authority and making good yardage;inter play
with other forwards; cracking line out ball; great try and an inspiration
to the rest of the forwards. Not bad for a tosser! Well played Fishy,
great to have you in the team.
Thanks also to Vigo for their efforts and their warm hospitality-not a bad
chilli either!
Merry Christmas to all our readers, and a prosperous 2009.
