Maidstone 3rd XV 48
Edenbridge 1st XV 0
With a host of changes and some late cry offs, Maidstone looked very
different from the team that normally takes the field-half the team
swanning off to Twickers and Wrighty's range rover boot in the car park.
Where is their loyalty?
The 15 that took the field still had the determination, nouse and ability
to dispose of a very poor Edenbridge team. An early try by Dom Baxter,
following a switch with fly half Dane Smith, was to be one of eight in the
afternoon.
The Bok Bull, Jacques, playing with an badly injured finger, continued his
scoring run, with a try after a good drive by prop, Simon Wright.
Maidstone forwards were now totally dominant in the loose, and Paul Glover
was winning all the Edenbridge line out ball. From a line out steal by
Glover, hooker Mike Hill drove over from the five yard line. Then before
half time, a blindside break by Tuggy was fed out to the Bull, who out
sprinted everyone to touch down under the posts from at least 60 yards
out. He did get tackled as he scored which led to the normal altercation
and chast pumping, but the Bull has to let his aggression out somehow.
edenbridge did put up more of a fight in the second half, keeping
Maidstone out for a twnty minute period and briefly threatening our line.
But Dane Smith eventually broke them down with 2 neat and forceful runs to
bag 2 tries.
Winger David Wahl caught a difficult ball out wide and used his pace to
score in the corner.
The last try came from a 5 metre scrum with the number 8 picking up and
forcing himself over the line.
Dom Baxter kicked 4 out of 8 conversions to complete the scoring.
There were good showings from all the late replacements, Olly Stride at
full back, Toby Young, normally a prop, played blindside, and Chris Finch
played out of position in the centre. All made a telling contribution and
what could have been a tricky away game was a comfortable victory.
Next week will be a little more intense I am sure, against local rivals
and top of table Aylesford. Wiil any of the Twickenham brigade be
available, or are they off on another jolly?
Man of match- Dane Smith, 2 good tries, got the backs moving well and did
not need to kick much. Pretty good for a Bush league player!
