Tunbridge Wells III vs Maidstone IV
The game nearly fell victim to the six nations, and with the whole of Maidstone's front row absent without leave, it was necessary to play with uncontested scrums and
with flanker David Scanlan standing in at scrum-half. So twelve
men lined up for kick off (three of the younger members losing their way en route) and Maidstone then proceeded to dominate the opening exchanges
and were unlucky not to get some early score.
Gradually however, Wells were allowed to get back into the game and to camp rather too close to the Maidstone line.
Neither side gained the upper hand until two of the errant players
arrived, some 15 minutes into the game. Their arrival broke the spell & Wells scored two tries but failed to convert. At last the missing player arrived and again the men bent their shoulders to the task at hand.So it was at the end of the first half with maidstone piling on the pressure Stu Bates went over the line on the overlap after some fine rucking & quick hands.
The secound half started out with Maidstone again putting Tunbridge under the cosh with fine aggressive play but just as the try line would appear so the last pass went astray or man tackled. The ref disallowed a fine kick & chase try because in the forwards eagerness to get the ball had accidently knocked him to the ground unsighting him .A harsh morsel to digest! Then to add insult to injury Tunbridge on a rare foray into the 4's half won a penalty duly converted to put them 8 points ahead a margin that despite the
tremendous efforts of the 4's couldn't be closed.
At this point the team would like to wish our hooker well as he's shortly to
start his second tour of duty with the army in Afghanistan. Good luck James
and we'll see you at the start of next season.
