Maidstone 51 Folkestone 3 |
Kent Cup Round 1
Maidstone proceeded into the next round of the Kent cup with an overwhelming victory against Folkestone from London 3.They were quickly on the score board with a catch and drive try by skipper Jon Sargent. This was quickly followed by a Craig Whitehead penalty for another off side offence. Maidstone kept the play in the visitor’s half with probing kicks, one of which led to another catch and drive try this time touched down by Steve Matthews. Folkestone responded with a penalty, but shortly afterwards Fly Half Dave Charlton wrong footed all the defence and scored a solo effort at the posts. Steve Matthews got another touchdown after a rolling maul that was giving the visitors all sorts of problems. The best try was just before half time with frenchman Alex Malejec dancing up the left wing to get the touchdown. Craig Whitehead added the points to put Maidstone 32 -3 at half time and the game all but won.
Dave Charlton got another try just after the restart to seal victory. This allowed some changes in the team to give others a run out. This included Tom Rogers who was coming back after a hamstring problem. This caused some errors due to the reorganisation. Lock Sam Johnson found himself out of place in the centre, but played the part perfectly with his well timed pass putting fellow Kiwi Eugine Moore over for yet another try.
Martin Arnold got the final touch down following a crashing break right through the centre. Dave Charlton had the final say with the conversion. This was a very satisfactory result but Maidstone know there are much harder battles to be fought in the coming months! Maidstones’ next Kent cup match will be against Lordswood on Sunday 15th January
It’s back to league action again this Saturday December 3rd at the mote against second placed Portsmouth KO 2.30
