Senior Club Round Up 16th October 2005
This is the first of what is hoped to be a regular slot on the web-site helping to keep players up-dated with what’s going on at the club.
For the 4th week in a row, Maidstone FC fielded 6 senior sides again this week making us one of the very few clubs in Kent still able to do so. This is good news for the Club and is indicative of a healthy interest in the game in and around the County Town. It is largely thanks to the efforts of the excellent skippers that we have on board this year, that this has been possible, as they seem to have an uncanny knack of being able to assemble sufficient players to fill the gaps that appear in their original selections. However, they can’t work miracles and all six of the Senior sides have a packed fixture list this year with barely a week-off between them so its very important that players support their teams with regular availability where possible.
Commiserations to the 1sts, who, in the absence of a number of regulars, took their heaviest beating in several seasons at League Leaders, Guildford.
On a brighter note, the Veterans under the perspirational leadership of Glyn Richards, remain the clubs only unbeaten side, having despatched Dartfordians Vets 22-0. This is a fixture that Maidstone have lost in recent years, which bodes well for the strength of the side this year. At this rate the Vets are sure to get a mention at the end of season Club-Dinner!!.
The next best achievement at the weekend was for the B xv to record a 0-0 draw with Gravesend V. As Trevor put it so succinctly in his text “ We didn’t lose, we didn’t win, we didn’t score, ref blew 10 minutes early at 0-0”. The B are having so many away fixtures at the moment that they have probably forgotten what life was like in “The Somme”.
The Mustangs, A and Extra A all went down in highly competitive matches. The A shipped 4 tries and went down to 14 men before fighting their way back into the game within one score with 5 minutes to go before losing to Old Alleynians II. The Extra A, supplemented by a couple of escapees from the Veterans, shipped 3 tries in the first half, scored three in the second half to level and then lost to an excellent TJ4s.
The Mustangs did the opposite and snatched defeat from the Jaws of Victory after dominating Sevenoaks II for 60 minutes.
Next week sees an important game for the 1sts against a Beckenham side that occupy the position immediately below Maidstone in the League Table.
The Mustangs will need to raise their game away to an Aylesford II that have won 4 of their first 5 Invicta League matches.
Looking ahead, please note that, unlike many clubs, we have scheduled several matches for New Year’s Eve – all of them at home – so make sure that your holiday arrangements enable you to participate in these festive fixtures - with a New Year’s Eve Party to follow. That’s got to be better than watching Jonathan Ross or going to the Out-Laws for the evening!!
