Maidstone vs Cranbrook Sunday 8 October 2006
The first half was dominated by Cranbrook as they scored 6 unanswered tries. Basic handling errors by the ’Stones, poor tackling and a lack of conviction at rucks combined with some fluid, efficient play by the Cranbrook backs meant that it was a very one-sided half. On the positive side the Maidstone forwards were competing effectively at set-pieces and winning their fair share of the ball.
In the second half Maidstone began brightly, the forwards continued to win ball but crucially in this half they retained and used it. The ‘Stones at last had both possession and territory. The first Maidstone try was not long in coming and was scored by Dualtagh Franklin reaching for the line after a strong drive by the forwards. Maidstone built from this and an excellent passing move and strong run from Ed Craddock resulted in a line-out 5mtrs out. Dualtagh Franklin stole the short ball at the front of the line and went over for his second try. Maidstone started another fluent move in their own half, winning ruck ball, running hard and passing accurately for space to open up on the left side which Ed Craddock was able to exploit with a long, 60 metre, run for the line. He scored under the posts and Dan Eastwood made the conversion. Cranbrook scored the final try of the match in the last minute.
Final score: Cranbrook 41, Maidstone 17.
Maidstone Man of the Match: Tom Kingston
