Beckenham 7 – 5 Maidstone
Maidstone travelled to S.E. London to face Beckenham. It was the Stones second game of the New Year and the feeling was pretty good.
The first half saw Maidstone’s pack totally dominate and only Beckenham backs kept the scores level until a fine passage of play saw stand-off Sam Ellis break and score in the corner, the conversion was first missed and with minutes left on the clock a kick and chase caught the Stones unaware and Beckenham scored under the posts and added the conversion. Half time score was 7-5.
The second half started just like the first, the referee was penalising Maidstone every time the ball was moved forward and frustration was kicking in and wave after wave was penalised for various offences?! With the clock ticking down Maidstone were disillusioned by the final whistle.
Maidstone had 75%-80% of the possession but were unable to convert this into scores. Beckenham bravely defended. Some refereeing decisions baffled players, coaches and spectators alike. We will put this down to experience and be a better side for it.
