Match Report
Maidstone U13s v Old Alleynians U13s
The Stones’ welcomed Old Alleynians to the Mote on Sunday for a game made up of 3 x 20 minutes. Playing in perfect conditions the visitors arguably got off to the better start (so no surprise there then!). However the Maidstone forwards soon began to exert their control with Ryan ‘Sherman’ Murphy, Harry Cole, Ryan Costello and Louis Frost at various times putting their opposite numbers under a lot of pressure. This allowed the likes of Drew Broster, Jacob Taylor, Jake Burford and Ali Fish to cause havoc in the Alleynians’ defence in the loose. The link up play and off loading in the tackle from the likes of Dan Fisher and Murphy also caused the opposition no end of trouble.
Due to the pressure exerted by the home team scrum the visitors’ talented backs were forced to live off a limited supply of ball although the Stones’ backs did well to limit the South East Londoners to three tries overall. Centres Dominic Smith and Cameron Laurenson in particular put in some big tackles to keep them at bay along with some sound defensive positional sense from the back three of Cameron Crawford-Smith, Daniel Ellesmere (who later took over at fly-half) and Lewis Midwinter. The third period saw a number of tactical and positional changes with the likes of Aiden Griffiths, Callum Sharpe and Charles Rossiter-Langworthy stepping up to the plate.
With the degree of control they had it was no surprise that the Stones’ forwards scored all but one of the tries, helped by the sniping runs of Luke Bannell and Nathaniel Littler who took it in turns to don the no. 9 jersey. Man of the Match Drew Broster led the way with three tries (though unfortunately his Dad was not there either to witness this or provide the traditional post match jug of ale – but it has been noted!). Jacob Taylor was hot on his heels with a brace with Dan Fisher and Simeon Wentzel claiming a try apiece. Wentzel also proved to have his kicking boots on as he slotted 5 out of 7 conversions to put the seal on a fine team display.
First period: 12-0; second period: 19-10; third period: 14-5.
