14/10/06 – Ashford III 0 pts v 12 pts Maidstone Vets
On a very warm October day, a good all round team performance with good tackling from forwards and backs, saw Maidstone beat a determined Ashford side.
The ball was won on numerous occasions from the scrum and several times the ball flowed down the line, with either some good defensive play from Ashford thwarting the Vets or passing not going to hand at the crucial final pass. However, after some persistent pressure including a strike against the head, the Vets broke through the gain line with Chris Linley touching down under the posts. The conversion was made by Keith Coomber.
With the resumption of the second half and the wind favouring Ashford, it was the Vets who were applying some early pressure and a kick and chase from Dave Hughes saw him touch down. The conversion was missed. The remainder of the game saw continued pressure from Ashford, which meant that the Vets had to tackle well. With the good efforts of forwards and backs, despite some silly penalties given away, the Vets kept out a determined Ashford whilst also achieving a clean sheet. A well fought and deserved victory.
