U15’s Match report. V Westcliff 18/1/09
For the first half Maidstone were playing with a stiff breeze behind, but the advantage was squandered inside the first two minutes, as from the first ruck, no-one was prepared to own the ball, it was smuggled by Westcliff, and the try conceded.
Maidstone were clearly shocked, but slowly came back into the game, however without really threatening. The pressure never really appeared secure, and it was perhaps no surprise when Westcliff broke out and scored a second try after 13 minutes.
From the re-start Maidstone were under immediate attack, and a third try was narrowly avoided by a timely tackle by Steve Haffenden. The pressure was relentless however, and the ball just held up on the line, before the inevitable try was scored.
At last Maidstone were able to string together some good phases of play, and through a series of free kicks they found themselves threatening Westcliff’s tryline. Danny was narrowly prevented from scoring, and lines were cleared just before half time.
From the re-start Maidstone seemed more assured, but only 5 minutes in Westcliff were able to break along the left wing for a converted try, despite some spirited Maidstone defence.
Once more Westcliff threatened, but on this occasion it was the visitors that benefited from a mistake, this time from a quick throw-in that was intercepted by Dan. Zac was able to convert from a central position.
Before long however, normal service was restored, with Maidstone conceding tries after 25 and 30 minutes.
Final score 32-7
