The Dream is over. After 6 years as captain of the Dream Team, Ross Laing stands down. Ross, 62, will still continue to ply his front row skills and has no intentions to retire, but felt he ought to give way to a younger man. Ross has always had a flourishing youth policy, developing such players as Dominic Baxter, Tom Challis, Phil Davies and Dave Coleman, which has been the key to the team’s success. Regular winners of the Mid Kent League and this year Ross led the over 35s to the Evergreen Cup Final. Crucial decision-making epitomised his game such as having a penalty on his own five-metre line and opting for a scrum. His wit and wisdom, as well as his enthusiasm and high fitness levels ( no doubt the result of his strict training regime ) have been paramount in helping him achieve cult ( I think that’s the correct spelling ) status amongst his players. Thank you Ross, on behalf of all the players who you have encouraged and led so magnificently.
Moving on, the team have gained the services of another up and coming youngster Roger Bentley, 72. Roger takes on the role of Team Manager, and his experience and insight will be a real asset in our quest to win back the Mid Kent title from Sevenoaks.
Roger is also keen to continue with the policy of bringing on youngsters, regularly regaling us with his memory of the young Webb Ellis picking up the ball and running with it.
So there are plenty of challenges ahead for players young and old, first of which is our annual clash against the Welsh in Cardiff on 13th September, followed by a punishing series of league games. However, with commitment, cooperation and competitiveness, not to mention the odd bonding session in the bar, it should be a good season. See you at training!
PS: Many thanks to our sponsors Britelite and Homewarm – both smashing companies. Glad they are still in the frame Paul Massey |
