Maidstone IV's vs Weavering
A bright windy day saw Maidstone 4ths take on Weavering in the Mid Kent B
League, both sides having won promotion last season. It seems that the two
teams are tied at the hip, right down to playing on adjacent pitches and
sharing players .In a hard fought match (sometimes to handbag swinging) the
friendly foes were slugging it out toe to toe, with neither side able to
assert themselves and gain the upper hand. Maidstone 4ths fought their way
into Weavering territory time and again, only to be driven back by the big
boot of the Weavering full-back.
Meanwhile, although the scrummage was a mess for both teams and had to be
constantly re-set, Maidstone probably had the better of them as novice
hooker Dave Jackson, struck several aginst the head. So, it was against the
run of play and an inability to break through the Maidstone defence that
Weavering opted for a penalty kick at goal .They missed, and not until the
dying minutes of the first half did they find themselves in the same
position: sadly this time they scored to lead 3 - 0.
In the first fixture between these two sides last year, Maidstone won 7-3
and it seemed as though history were about to be repeated as the second half
saw the 4's come out fighting with renewed vigour, enabling them to spend
the best part of the half camped in their opponents territory.
It seemed to be only a matter of time before they crossed for a try but the
Weavering defence was stout and Maidstone's momentum kept being dissipated
by fumbles or technical infringements. With 10 minutes to go (and with prop
Jim Walker in the sin-bin for persistent "chat"), Maidstone intensified the
pressure in order to secure a win but Weavering managed to break out and win
a kick and chase to score the only try of the match and to emerge as
deserving winners, having taken their chances when the 4ths failed to take
theirs.
