On a very wet week-end in November, playing rugby turned out to be a much better option than staying in the club-house and watching the dross served up by England and Argentina.  Commiserations to anyone who payed £65 a ticket to watch aimless ping-pong for 80 minutes.

Given their relative league positions, It would have been something of a surprise if the First Team had beaten Cobham but thanks in part to an outstanding performance at scrum-half from the Evergreen Tuggy, they did at least manage to give them a competitive match, as the Cobham Match report makes clear.

No game for the Mustangs this week and no room in the 3rd team for any of the Mustangs either, so for the 3rds to achieve a draw against Tunbridge Wells 2nds was a pretty good result – except that it would have been a win but for a last minute try from Wells. 2 tries from Dominic Baxter at scrum-half means that competition for the 3rd team scrum-half berth is hotting-up week by week.

The 4ths played Gravesend 3rds in a heavy cross-wind which resulted in barely one straight line-out throw during the entire game. 5-0 down at half-time, it could have been any-one’s game but Gravesend’s superior picking and driving made the difference. However, a pretty creditable performance given that it was 3rds vs 4ths. Nice to see the “big-rig” Darren Yates having a rare run-out and showing some of his trade-mark solo-runs but alas, none crossing the line.

The 5ths switched their match to Gravesend owing to unplayable pitches at home and played with a powerful head-wind to lead 5-0 at half-time. This wasn’t to be enough to secure a victory and they conceded 21 points in the 2nd half.

The Vets were all smiles in the club-house after a tough game against Dover vets despite having lost 5-10. Guess they were glad to have got a game despite the weather and to avoid seeing the England game on TV.  Dover certainly enjoyed the game and are keen to arrange a re-match before the season is out.

Next Week

A rare week off for the 1sts owing to a bye in the Kent Cup, whilst the Mustangs will be playing Dover II at home in a friendly. The 3rd team friendly against Tonbridge Judds III has been cancelled owing to an Evergreen Cup 2nd round match vs Old Beccehamians Vets at The Mote on Sunday at 2pm.  These Evergreen Cup matches are highly competitive and provide great entertainment, giving a chance to see some of Maidstone’s finest players of recent years in action, so come and cheer the team along as they aim to reach the final for a 3rd successive year.

Nick Buttle is a Kent Society referee who lives in Bearsted and has often officiated at the club and helped us out out with our youth festivals etc.    Nick is battling to overcome Leukaemia and needs to find a stem-cell donor.  See attached flyer.  We are hosting a clinic at the Club on 10th December, between 5 and 9pm to gain new members aged 18-40 for the Anthony Nolan Trust stem-cell register, by means of a saliva swab.  I hope that as a club, we can give Nick our best possible support. Please send the flyer to anyone else that you think might wish to attend and join the register.
