 Results for 17th Oct.

Looking in the match report for a couple of positive's to take into next week's fixture against the only other winless team in London One South, Maidstone at least posted their biggest points tally of the season and scored four tries for the first time this year to give the home crowd something to cheer, the biggest cheer being for tight head prop Rob Jeffrey popping up on the wing to run in and score in the corner.  (Captured on camera by Bob Hayton - see Gallery)

.

The Mustangs were lucky to have any opposition at all after Elthamians II bizarrely pulled out of the scheduled Invicta Cup match early in the week and conceded victory.  Sidcup II stepped into the breach despite not having a front-row available and played with uncontested scrums in a closely fought match that was much more even than the recent League encounter against the same oppo. STOP PRESS: FORGOT TO MENTION A CHEEKY LITTLE CAMEO FROM CLUB-CAPTAIN MARK RYAN, PLAYING HIS FIRST RUGBY OF THE SEASON, WHO CAME ON FOR 2O MINS AT THE END AND SCORED 2 TRIES  :-)

.

The Thirds thought that they had a game plan capable of turning the tables on a young Folkestone II side after the recent league defeat against the same oppo. But despite taking some young legs with them, Folkestone proved to have the edge once again and clinched the result to go through to the next round of the cup. Ben Rookledge got the accolades for man of the match for his all-action performance.

.

The fourths were hoping to put up a convincing show against East Peckham, especially as Peckham were the only team to beat them home and away last season.  However, despite being a good match for Peckham in most areas of the field, Peckham had far too much pace at 9,10 and 15 for a 4th team to cope with, fielding players who are playing in a comfort zone way below their capabilities. Whilst the quest for a settled 4th team continues, there were impressive debuts for Ben Lobos at No8, who looks like a very well coached player and for Nick Sullivan, playing his 1st game for several years but showing plenty of class.  It was also good to see the return of John Broadley who has been out for 2 months owing to a pre-season injury.

.

The 5ths came back from Ashford IV with the right result but with a huge shiner for prop Paul Kelly, who received a nasty punch in the eye, whilst trying to prevent a maul from trampling on an Ashford player.  Mike Gillies and Richard Nunn got most of the points again, whilst novice hooker Ben Hodges, was man of the match.

.

The Vets made the long trip to Thanet and had the game seemingly wrapped up by half-time, thanks largely to a hat-trick of tries from rejuvenated scrum-half, Simon Randall.  Late into the game however, Thanet crossed the line and despite the ball not being grounded, the referee awarded a try that could have drawn the match for Thanet. Huge respect therefore to the Thanet "scorer" who immediately spoke up to say that it wasnt a valid try and got the decision over-turned.  The Corinthian ethos is alive and well and living in Broadstairs.

NEXT WEEK

Next weeks fixtures throw-up some interesting local encounters but also graphically illustrate the challenge facing our players this season in the lower sides.  The Mustangs are facing National League side Canterbury's seconds, the 3rds are facing Aylesford 2nds, who provided stiff opposition for the Mustangs last year and the 4ths are facing Anchorians II, who have usually vied with our 3rds for the Mid Kent A League title, so when one looks at the Wins vs Losses tally for the club this season so far, its important to keep that in perspective and to acknowledge the efforts of our players as they face these challenges week after week.
