Maidstone had been eating too much pre match yoghurt, because they were totally mullered. A shambles of a warm up was immediately exploited by the young, very quick and very aware Beckenham backs and a procession of tries ensued which were very pleasing on the eye but not so much in the heart. This continued virtually unabated throughout the afternoon , leading to one of the worst defeats in third team memory-and some of the players go back a long way, which really was the essence of the problem.
Maidstone did leave the field with some credit, in that they dominated the scrum, but even then Becks held out for the last 5 minutes on their own 5 metre line.
One to forget, but a real lesson in classy back play and speed to breakdown. Congratulations to Beckenham for playing such an open, expansive game.
Thanks also to the lads from the Vets who stepped in to shore up some holes, otherwise we may have been looking at 3 figures.
Man of match – Tom Challis –as usual Tom played with commitment, physicality and passion, always in the thick of things. He will be missed when he goes to all the internationals.
