Match Report

Lordswood II 10, Maidstone IV 17 Sat 26th Sept 2009

This week’s 4th team arrived at Lordswood to take onLordswood's 2nd team, of
young, fit looking chaps (big improvement from the 3rds we played last
year!!!). With a little help from the 5th team skipper we were able to
field a stronger team than we could have on Friday night.

Maidstone’s smaller pack dominated all early exchanges, however a lack
of continuity and some poor tackling enabled the opposition to take an
undeserved lead scoring under the posts.

Again after some strong forward play Darren Banfield then hit back
with 10 points of his own, by way of a penalty and converted try.
Maidstone’s line out and scrum was working really well throughout
regularly winning opposition ball, yet we could not make the possession
count with points.

As the scoreboard remained static, the game broke down and mistakes
crept in to our game resulting in a well worked try from Lordswood’s
sprightly winger.

Bob Purfitt and his forwards raised their game to a higher level and
with strong running from Toby Young and Jack Budgen Maidstone were soon
again camped in Lordswood’s half. A quick ball, followed by some direct
running and an offload from Banfield gave Mark Staples with only the
full back to beat to take the lead for the final time by touching down
under the posts.

The final score of 17-12 does not reflect the game itself, but a well
deserved victory. it was just a shame that it ended with further
niggles from Lordswood culminating in their openside being cited for a
punch that put Jack Budgen into hospital with concussion as the final whistle blew.

Thanks again to Steve Quinn, who lept like a salmon in the line out
and was a real asset on the day. If we presented man of the match award
it would have been won jointly by the Pack….Good job!
