Maidstone Rugby Club Home

Here we are again, the start of a new season. The 2015/2016 season. One which promises to be full of opportunity and excitement for the Mustangs.  It’s no secret that despite the incredibly successful season Maidstone’s 1st XV had (which culminated into that extraordinary victory at Twickenham), in the Mustangs XV, we had a tougher time.  However, although the results didn’t always go our way last year was a great start. There was a lot potential shown from all involved which resulted in some good wins such as Charlton Park away. However, more importantly, I feel was the mentality and atmosphere which was built into this squad. We started last year as a group of individual rugby players and yet managed to finish it as a team, determined to work hard and push forward. This bond was one of our main aims on and off the pitch, that no matter what team you usually play for, on that Saturday you were a Mustang.

So what does that mean for this season ahead, I hear you ask?

Firstly, it is one of my personal goals as captain to keep the team mentality going, all working together towards the single aim of challenging for the top spot in our league. It is key for the sustainability of the club to have a second team working well together and pushing hard. I’m sure if we achieve this like last year there will be a large number of players in competition for that first team jersey.

Secondly, it is with great pleasure that we welcome our own dedicated Mustangs Coach, Michael Hebden. Michael is a great addition to the coaching team, who will help increase the skill level and structure of the Mustangs as well as introducing a more professional set up, which in turn will help broaden the strength and depth of our senior squads.

It is also really good to see the number of players this season in contention to wear the Mustangs strip. With the development squad players of last year showing great progression and throwing their names in the hats for both 1st and 2nd team jerseys, as well as returning players who have worked hard over the break and preseason. We also welcome a number of talented new players to the club who are keen to make an impact.

So all in all, it’s a great start.  Despite being in a competitive league with teams such as Tonbridge Juddian 2s, Canterbury 2s, Elthamians 3s and many more it is my firm belief that we can and will challenge for that top spot this year.

All that is left to say is that it was a great honour to captain the side last year (my first year back from university) and a privilege to be chosen to do the same this year. It is an exciting time for the club as we keep moving towards bigger and better things and it is great to be a part of.  So keep your eye on the Mustangs this season because I can promise you an exciting season full of hard work and no short supply of alcoholic beverages in the club house after each of our victories!
