Season 2011/12
Having played at Maidstone Rugby Club for the past 20 years I consider it the greatest honour to be asked to captain the 1st XV in the upcoming 2011/12 season league & cup campaigns.
Throughout my time in this club we have had some outstanding and committed captains that I have had the pleasure to play under, and I hope to channel their contributions as inspiration for myself, the team and club for what we want to achieve in the upcoming season. At this point I would like to take this opportunity to thank John O’Brien for the job he did leading the team last season.
More so than ever before the club as a whole is going to play a huge role in what we achieve on the pitch during this league campaign. Maidstone Rugby Club is not any one team or a collection of individuals; it is a club, and a club that must and can pull together in order to re-affirm ourselves as a leading Kent’s rugby centre.
Being asked to lead the 1st XV is a privilege few have the honour of undertaking and I will endeavour to give these duties the commitment and drive it deserves. Leading Maidstone 1st XV is something that I have always aspired to do and it’s not very often a prop is selected for a role like this, something to do with intelligence so I am told (!) so with this in mind I will be looking to my team and club for support.
Having attended the pre-season training, (well apart from a few sessions following an incident with my big toe!), I can report that there is a feeling of anticipation, excitement, expectation and energy from both players and coaching staff alike. We feel that as a team, squad and club we can achieve what we demand of ourselves in order that we once again give the county town’s club and our supporters something to cheer about.
I look forward to seeing you all during the season.
Jim Walker
1st XV Captain
